Oncino
After spending a lot of time in the nature with hiking and cycling we thought about a small city trip in Turin. Well it’s often the same when you come out of nature to the city – you just see the dirty corners/pollution, a lot of traffic and stressed people. Luckily we found a relaxed bar where we could use the internet; we searched for “hiking in Piemont”. It was pure coincidence that we found ONCINO. A little village on 1250m. Spontaneously we decided to go there. A quiet place, far away from civilization and in the middle of the nature. Monday the 26 January we were driving little serpentines not knowing where they would end. At night we finally arrived at a little parking place in Oncino…. We decided to stay there for the night not knowing what would expect us the coming day(s). Waking up the next morning we could not believe our eyes. The sun was rising and shined directly in our window and we had a unbelievable panorama of the Alps with a blue sky. We took out our chairs, put them next the bus and enjoyed our breakfast with a wonderful view. The first day we explored the little village and wondered who is still living there because most of the houses seemed to be empty. We discovered a lot of various hiking trails but most of them were covered with a lot of snow. We were not scared off, but got creative… David made us “garmschen”, out of an old cover of my sleeping bag and an old rice sack- just great and incredible practicable….So we were well prepared for the first trail!
Now and then we saw some persons, greeted but everything seemed a bit mysterious…. But after two days an inhabitant of the village came towards us and so the story of Oncino began…. After some chatting with Piero he invited us for diner. Bit by bit we got to know the commune and the people who are still living there - 12 in total-. All of them have an open heart and are more than hospitable. No evening we ate alone anymore and got a delicious 5 gear menu. We got to know the Bagna Couda, one of the traditional dishes of Piemont, Italian Antipasti, Raclette and a lot of other tasty food. There was no lack of anything. Our clothes were washed, we got a lot of wood for our stove and were allowed to have a warm shower at their place. Just incredible! Mario and Renata have some hens who make the most delicious eggs ever! Further they gave us a lot of various tips for making hiking trails and we got equipped with outdoor materials.
Over days we made some hikes, we went up to Testa di Cervetta, Monte Tivoli and every time we got rewarded with a great view. If you love the mountains and want to make some hiking trails we can just advice you Oncino.
Oncino is an old village, long time ago it had 2000 inhabitants but by the time everybody moved to the city for work and for a more comfortable life. It’s sad because there are no more young people and the village might die out. Of course in the summer months there are more tourists who make hiking tours of who have a vacation house there but during the winter months you meet nearly nobody…. Life seems harder in the mountains, even more simple but you receive a lot- surrounded by the beauty of the mountains.
One day we went to a whole which Mario and Renata discovered 40 years ago. We went there with two other guys. Finally we arrived and the guys entered. Mario told that people of former times put a cat in it and after one week it arrived around 10 km further down at the Bivio- just incredible… but for us the little whole ended earlier because it became too small. If you have claustrophobia this is not advisable!
We also met Maria Grazia and Irene; mother and daughter who are running a Agritourism called the “Mullatiere”. Also a place where we got invited for great food and a good company. They have some rooms to sleep and serve delicious vegan and vegetarian food. Further they have some animals bees for making honey if possible, Gänse and Ziege. In the summer times they even make guided tours with them. Two lovely and very funny girls with an open heart and house.
After ten days we thought about leaving Oncino, on the one side with a “heavy” heart, because we had a splendid time there but on the other hand we thought about going climbing in Liguria. Thursday we planned to leave, but then everything came different than we thought. It was snowing and not just a bit… Wednesday it started and didn’t stop until Saturday – more than 1,50 m snow- . We could not believe it…the people were happy but it was not easy putting away all the snow. If you finished you could start again. Especially you had to take care for the animals because they got lost in the snow- also one goose which was luckily found two days later and it was still alive and doing fine. In the morning we could hardly open the door of the bus, but then our rescue came, Mario with his fräse, a lovely playing gadget for all men ;) and together we freed us from the snow.
In the end we stayed 2 weeks at Oncino until the snow allowed us to leave the place- it was a sign the people said.

Oncino
Dopo essere stato un giorno a Torino desideravamo un posto tranquillo, lontano dalla “civiltà” e in mezzo della natura. Volevamo andare ad un bel posto con la possibilità di fare escursioni. Sulla carta abbiamo trovato una piccola paese que si chiama Oncino. Lunedi notte siamo arrivati ad un piccolo parcheggio senza sapere dove siamo finiti esattamente. Era pura coincidenza! Quando ci siamo svegliati non potevamo credere ai nostri occhi. Il sole stava sorgendo e abbiamo avuto un panorama incredibile con un cielo blu. Abbiamo preso le nostre sedie fuori e abbiamo fatto colazione con una vista meravigliosa. Il primo giorno abbiamo esplorato la piccola paese. Tante case sembravano vuote e non sapevamo quante persone vivono anocra a Oncino.
Abbiamo scoperto diversi sentieri, ma coperti con un sacco di neve. Non siamo stati spaventati, ma creativi !David ha fatto "garmschen", da una vecchia copertina del mio saccopelo e da una vecchia bustina di riso; semplice e fantastico ... Così eravamo preparati per i prossimi sentieri!
A volte abbiamo visto alcune persone, ma tutto era tranquillo außer la notte quando Bea é scapata da i cani e strani geräusche dal bosco - alla fine…. i cani erano bravi e nel bosco sono i caprioli que fanno quel brutto rumore.
Dopo due giorni un abitante del villaggio è venuto e così la storia di Oncino ha iniziato .... Dopo un po di parole con Piero eravamo invitati a cena. Dopo due altri giorni abbiamo conoscuti piu o meno tutte le persone che vivono a Oncino- in inverno ca.15 in totale-. Tutti hanno un cuore aperto e sono piú di ospitali!! Nessun sera abbiamo mangiato più da soli- il cibo era sempre buonissimo e abbastanza! Le persone hanno fatto dei piatti tradizionali di Piemonte come la Bagna Couda, Antipasti e Raclette e un sacco di altri piatti gustosi. Non mancava di qualcosa! Era come essere a casa!
Mario e Renata hanno le galline che fanno le più gustose uove que si puo immaginare- il eigelb non é giallo ma rossa-.
Una bella cosa era anche il radio: “Bea, Bea mi senti? ….Dimmi!” Anche noi vogliamo avere un radio J e troppo divertente e sopratutto utile!
A Oncino abbiamo fatto alcune escursioni, siamo andati fino a Testa di Cervetta, Monte Tivoli e ogni volta avevamo una splendida vista. Con Mario siamo andati a un buco o una grotta piccola…. David é entrato con due altri ragazzi- troppo stretto per Beate J
Abbiamo anche incontrato Maria Grazia e Irene; madre e figlia, che hanno un agriturismo che si chiama " La Mullatiere". Un posto dove ci siamo invitati per il cibo e una buona compagnia. Loro hanno alcune camere per dormire e servono cibo delizioso vegan e vegetariano. Inoltre hanno alcuni animali per fare il miele, se é possibile, le occe e pecore. In estate fanno anche tours con le pecore. Maria Grazia e Irene sono due persone belle e molto divertente con un cuore e casa aperto.
Dopo dieci giorni abbiamo pensato di andare ad arrampicare in Ligure…. La decisione non era facilie perque é troppo bello a Oncino e si potrebbe stare lí per altri 10 giorni o piú. Ma il vostro giro non era giá finito….
Giovedi volevamo andare via ma poi tutto è venuto diverso come abbiamo pensato. Miercoledí sera ha iniziato di nevicare e non solo un pó! Non si è fermata fino a Sabato. In totale nevicava piú di 1,50m. Noi non abbiamo visto mai cosi tanta di neve; non potevamo credere ... e non era facile mettere via tutta la neve con la palla. Ma di mattina Mario é venuto con la sua Fräse, un bel giocco per tutti gli uomini :) e insieme ci siamo liberati dalla neve. Con tutta la neve non si trovava piú il legno per la nostra stufa ma per fortuna non cerá un problemo perche le persone fanno tanto di legno lí e hanno dato un sacco a noi- grazie!
Alla fine siamo stati 2 settimane a Oncino que erá una bella esperienza per noi!
Se amate la montagna ci consigliamo Oncino!
